Bento #1
This is my version of Bento #1 from JustBento.com. Just Bento doesn’t so much feature charaben as it does a combo of basic bento and soshoku (healthy) bento, so this is less cute and more healthy.
Left to right, we have: brown rice (not Japanese – I decided instead of being exact to be frugal and use what I already had); steamed cut green beans and crinkle cut carrots (from frozen; you can see at Just Bento that she’s used fresh and cut the carrots into strips); a hard boiled quail egg; stir-fried tofu and green onions with oyster sauce (she used deep-fried tofu).

I’m not sure I understand her water-frying method for the tofu. I went through a big tofu phase, but never got it to cook in nice rbown cubes like hers. Later I discovered that this was probably because I used “silken” tofu, which apparently doesn’t process in the right way to do it.
Quail eggs just sound exciting! Where do you get them and are they actually different from egg-eggs?
Her tofu has already been deep fried before she purchased it. I think that’s why her frying method works and why it’s all nice golden brown. I used silken tofu and just pan-fried it, so I also ended up with nothing so golden brown. The quail eggs came from Grand Asia Market which is Cary-wards. I haven’t tried them yet, but I’ll let you know once I have if there’s any noticeable difference other than the size. They’re so tiny!
I can confirm the existent of pre-fried tofu puffs, and they are delicious. (Although probably not as good for you as not deep-fried? But so delicious.)
Ugh, Kiba. Just ugh. 1-I’m scared of quail eggs, but your picture makes them look pretty good. 2-I *just had* lunch and thanks to you, now I’m drooling and my stomach is convinced it’s time to eat again, when it is not. Bento #1 looks sooo delicious.

Hmmm… not sure what I think of pre-fried tofu. At some point it just becomes an exotic take on regular convenience foods. (which I am not at all above using. I love vacuume-sealed curries.) Eventually I am going to have to get the real deal and go through the ‘press out the water and fry’ process, but since I lack time and money, these days I just use veggies in my vegetarian dishes and go ahead and use meat when I need the proteins!
